Test for herpes may require a cone biopsy especially if oral sex was performed on a partner with genital herpes. Viral culture of the virus is usually performed to make the diagnosis. A scraping from the lesion is usually done and analyzed in a lab with results being ready within 16 hours to 7 days. Mouth lesion biopsy and other ways of determining the condition are also used.
